For the best results, use standard dry erase markers and clean the surface regularly rather than allowing writing to remain for extended periods.
Everyday Cleaning
- Allow dry erase marker ink to dry before erasing to help prevent smearing.
- Erase using a clean dry erase eraser or soft microfiber cloth.
- Clean the surface regularly so marker residue does not build up.
- If necessary, lightly dampen a microfiber cloth with water and wipe the surface clean.
- Allow the surface to dry completely before writing on it again.
Leaving ink on the surface for long periods can make it harder to remove over time.
Keeping your eraser and cleaning cloth clean is also important. An eraser loaded with old marker residue can simply redistribute ink across the surface.
Deep Cleaning & Ghosting
Over time, you may notice faint shadows or “ghosting” where previous writing remains slightly visible.
For a deeper cleaning:
- Apply a small amount of isopropyl alcohol to a clean microfiber cloth.
- Gently wipe the affected area.
- Wipe the surface again with a clean cloth dampened with water to remove any remaining residue.
- Dry the surface completely before using it again.
Do not spray cleaner directly onto the vinyl. Apply it to the cloth first. This gives you better control over the amount of cleaner being used.
Isopropyl alcohol is best reserved for deeper cleaning and stubborn marker residue rather than being necessary after every use.
Cleaners to Avoid
To help protect the dry erase surface, avoid:
- Abrasive cleaners or scrubbing pads
- Magic Erasers or other abrasive cleaning sponges
- Bleach and harsh disinfectants
- Ammonia-based cleaners
- Acetone, paint thinner, and other strong solvents
- Rough or abrasive towels and cleaning materials
Harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaning methods can damage the writable surface and may make future dry erase marks more difficult to remove.
Accidentally Used a Permanent Marker?
Don’t panic. In some cases, permanent marker can be removed from a dry erase surface.
First, try writing directly over the permanent marker with a standard dry erase marker. Then wipe both inks away with a clean dry erase eraser or microfiber cloth.
If residue remains, lightly dampen a microfiber cloth with isopropyl alcohol and gently clean the affected area. Follow with a clean, water-dampened cloth and dry the surface completely.
Compatible Markers
Our dry erase products work best with standard dry erase markers (Expo® or similar). Read more about dry erase markers. Avoid permanent markers or wet-erase markers unless your design specifically calls for them.
